If you have overly large breasts, breast reduction surgery can be a tremendously life-enhancing option. The procedure will give you far more than just smaller, firmer breasts. You will also get immense relief from many physical and emotional discomforts, a new sense of freedom in your exercise and physical activity and the ability to wear a greater variety of clothing styles

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain due to the weight of your breasts
  • Heavy sagging breasts with very low nipples
  • Breasts that are too large to your body frame
  • Skin irritation beneath your breasts
  • Indentations in your shoulders due to tight bra straps
  • Restriction of physical activity due to size and weight of your breasts
  • Self-conscious about the large size of your breasts
  • One breast is much larger than the other

If you ever wished that your breasts were firmer, higher and more youthful-looking, breast lift surgery may be a good option for you. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure by restoring the lift and shape that is often lost due to gravity and post-pregnancy. If you have lost breast volume over the years and you want to add more fullness, implants may be inserted to increase breast size.

You may be a good candidate for breast lift if you have:

  • Pendulous breasts
  • Breasts that lack substance or firmness
  • Nipples and areola pointing downwards

The results are more long-lasting for women whose breasts are smaller and lighter.

Breast reduction is performed in the hospital under general anaesthesia.
The most common method uses a two part incision. One part is made around the areola and another running vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. In breast reduction, the excess breast tissue, fat and skin is removed (in breast lift the breast tissue is repositioned and not excised); the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which is usually larger than ideal is reduced in size. Skin is then relocated to reshape the breasts. Liposuction may be used to improve the contour of your breasts. The nipple and areola usually remain attached to their underlying breast tissue as they are moved to a higher position. In very large breasts, the nipples and areolas may be separated from the underlying tissues and relocated higher (this prevents future breast feeding)
When the surgery is complete, you will be given a dressing over your breasts. Small drain tubes may be inserted under your skin to prevent fluid accumulation.

You must walk around to promote blood circulation early after surgery. You must wear a supportive bra. Although everyone heals at different rates, your recovery is generally as follows:
The dressing will be removed within few days. Drain tubes come out after a few days. Stitches will generally be removed by the tenth day after surgery.
You may return to work in a few days and resume most of your normal activities within a week or two.
Your breasts will settle into a natural shape after a few weeks. The nipple sensations (if affected) improve after a few months.
The pressure garment must be worn as instructed for at least 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Without the excessive weight of large breasts, you may find that you enjoy life more. Your body will look better proportioned, clothes will fit better and you will have greater freedom to enjoy physical activities.
After breast lift surgery, your breasts will feel firmer and appear more youthful and uplifted. The position of your areolas and nipples will be improved and your areolas will be more pleasingly proportioned.
Although the incisions will be permanently visible, they will fade and can be easily concealed with clothing.
However, you must bear in mind that over time, the effects of gravity and aging will continue.

You may have a detailed discussion about this during your personal consultation. Some of the possible complications include – anaesthesia related complications, infection, delayed skin healing, hematoma, altered nipple sensation, may affect breast feeding (esp. if free nipple-areolar graft done), asymmetry etc.
